What if you do not accept WhatsApp Privacy Policy by 15th May

WhatsApp has started sending new in-app notifications to users, reminding them to accept the new terms of services and privacy policies.

The Facebook owned messaging app was supposed to roll out its new privacy policy by February 8th but it was delayed to May 15th when users started raising privacy concerns.

Many WhatsApp users shifted to other messaging apps like Telegram and Signal as well. So, if you don’t accept the new privacy policies till 15th May, you will not able to use some functionality.

What if you don’t accept new privacy policy

According to the FAQs page of WhatsApp, if you have not accepted the new policy by then for a short period of time “you will be able to receive calls and notifications, but will not be able to read or send messages”.

Now, WhatsApp says that you will still be able to accept its new privacy policy after 15th May and get back to using the app with full functionality.


If you do not Accept the new privacy policy after deadline of 15th May, your account will be classified as inactive.

As per the latest data policies, an account which reamins inactive for 120 days will be deleted by WhatsApp automatically.

So, Basically you have three options:

  • Accept the new WhatsApp’s privacy policy.
  • Move or shift to another messaging app like Signal or Telegram.
  • Export your chat before 15th May and import it to Telegram using new chat export feature.

What data will be shared if you agree to WhatsApp Privacy Policy?

The information that they share with the other Facebook Companies includes –

  • Your account information (such as your phone number)
  • Transaction data (for example, if you use Facebook Pay or Shops in WhatsApp)
  • Service-related information
  • Information on how you interact with businesses when using our Services
  • Mobile device information
  • Your IP address

and other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent.


This means that once you accepted the updated privacy policy, the app will be able to share user details such as your phone numbers and transaction data, IP address, etc.
