If you have ever wanted to share a YouTube video with someone, but know they will not sit through an entire video, then there is a way that lets you share just the part of the video that you want to show them.
Linking to a specific time in a YouTube video is a great trick for when you just want to show someone a specific part of a video, especially if the video is too long and the part that you want to share comes after few seconds or minutes it starts playing.
Here’s how you can share a YouTube video at specific time in the YouTube app or in website.
Share YouTube Video at Specific Time
YouTube’s sharing feature lets you send videos at a certain time, no matter how long the video is. What this means is that when the person you send it to opens the video, it will skip straight to the timestamp you selected.
From YouTube Website
It’s easy to share to the exact part of any YouTube video on a browser. Below is the step-by-step guide to share the part of video you want to show them.
- Open YouTube website in any browser on your PC.
- Choose a video which you want to share.
- Click on the Share option.
- Here, you will see a new share window.
- Check the box of Start at, placed at the bottom of the share window.

- Now, edit the start time. By default, it should show the time you click the Share button, but you can change it.
- Finally, Share the YouTube video at a specific time by clicking available social media options or just copy the URL to share.
From YouTube App
The YouTube app does not have the Start at option as of now, but still there is a way to create a Timestamp link from the YouTube App using your smartphone. This method for sharing YouTube videos at a specific time can be done by adding a code to the URL.
- Open the YouTube App in your smartphone.
- Choose a video which you want to share.
- Click on the share button and copy the link of the video.
- Before sharing the link, you need to add:
- If timestamp is less than a minute: Add ?t=(timestamp)s after the URL, for example, if the timestamp is 56 seconds, then add ?t=56s after the link copied above.
- If timestamp is more than a minute: Add ?t=XmYs after the URL (here, X stands for minutes and Y stands for seconds), for example, if the timestamp is 1 minutes and 48 seconds, then add ?t=1m48s after the link copied above.
If you find that the second method is difficult then you can use the first method on smartphone. To use first method in your smartphone, repeat the steps mentioned in method one, in any browser on your phone.
These are the ways by which you can share a short portion of a YouTube video, which will automatically start from the point from where you want them to watch it.
