Deactivate Facebook Messenger

Before you can deactivate Facebook Messenger, you need to deactivate your Facebook account. If you want to continue using Facebook without Messenger, you will have to just ignore it.

The best way to do this is to simply delete the app from your device. You will still see communication requests in the top-right corner of your Facebook feed on the desktop website.

After deactivating your Facebook account, follow the below steps to deactivate your Messenger.

On Android

  • Open the Facebook Messenger app in your smartphone.
  • Click on your profile picture in the top right corner or click on three lines menu.
  • Scroll down and Select Settings.
  • Now, Scroll down and click on Legal and Policies.
  • On the next screen, click on Deactivate Messenger.
  • Enter your password, and tap on Continue.
  • To reactivate Facebook Messenger, just log back into the Messenger app using your username and password.

On iOS

  • Open the Facebook Messenger app in your smartphone.
  • Click on your profile picture in the top left corner.
  • Scroll down and click on Legal and Policies.
  • On the next screen, click on Deactivate Messenger.
  • Enter your password, and tap on Continue.
  • To reactivate Facebook Messenger, just log back into the Messenger app using your username and password.

You can reactivate your Facebook Messenger account in future by logging back in to Facebook Messenger with your username and password. Reactivating Messenger will also reactivate your main Facebook account.

If you delete your Facebook account completely, you will lose also access to Messenger. There is no way to keep Messenger without maintaining a Facebook profile.
