Haptics is the technology for adding touch and feelings to a computer. It is a tactile feedback technology. It can create an experience of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user. A haptic device with computer-generated environments gives people a sense of touch so that when they touch virtual objects, they feel it real.

In the 1970s and 1980s, research efforts in a completely different field began to focus on artificiality and perception through the touch of robotics. In the early 1990s, a new use of the word haptics emerged. Virtualized optics or computer optics made possible the fusion of many emerging technologies.

Over time, haptics technology has advanced. In the year 2015 Apple launched Apple Watch that uses skin tap sensing to transmit notifications and alerts from the watch wearer’s mobile phone.

Let’s divide the haptics working into two parts. They are as a human and mechanical part.

  • The human part perceives and controls the position of the hand.
  • On the other hand, the machine part uses force from the hand to mimic contact with a virtual object.

There are two types of haptic feedback. They are tactile and force feedback.

  • Force feedback reproduces directions generated from solid boundaries. Inertia and weight of virtual objects are examples of force feedback.

Like all other technologies, haptic technology also has its advantages and disadvantages.

  • This technology helps to reduce working hours and the communication is focused on touch and the virtual world can function as a real world.
  • The high price, large weight, and size are the disadvantages of haptic technology, especially for wearable devices. Also, the precision of the touch requires a lot of advanced design.
  • Haptic is considered to be the future of online shopping. In the textile industry, the consumer can learn and experience the structure and quality of the material while buying fabrics on the internet. The interface makes the tools practical and inexpensive and widely accessible.
  • Future generation of mobile devices and game console accessories provide more haptic feedback.
  • Recently, in the field of education, virtual reality systems containing haptic devices have been used.
  • The increasing number of applications of haptic devices will lead to lower prices for haptic devices in the future. This will be one of the main reasons for the commercialization of haptics.
  • Haptic devices need to be designed in small and compact sizes. So they are portable, enabling them to use almost all fields.
